The story of Feskekörka

HISTORY AND BEGINNINGS Fish sales have always been important in Gothenburg and have had their home in several places. In early Gothenburg, sales took place below the Wijkska House at Lilla Torget. Later, they were moved to the Stora Hamnkanalen right in front of the German Church. Sales took place from a large raft that was built of thick planks on fixed piles and rough crossbeams. Hygiene was not the best; at the fish raft, the herring was dumped in large piles directly onto the street and it was difficult for pedestrians to get around. When the trade was over, the fish waste was left in piles and, especially during the summer, the stench was almost unbearable. When Gothenburg's new stock exchange building was completed in 1849, the area around it wanted to be tidied up. The fish raft was banned and sales were moved to the newly built Fisktorget at Rosenlundskanalen. The problem with hygiene remained, however – sun and rainfall affected the quality of the fish, as did dirt and dust from the nearby streets. The same problem was experienced on Kungstorget, where farmers came to sell their goods. In 1871, a decision was therefore made to build a fish hall on Fisktorget and a market hall on Kungstorget. Both buildings were granted 75,000 kronor each from the Renströmska Fund. The final bill for the construction of the Fiskhallen, including furnishings, was 74,963 kronor and 12 öre, so it can be seen that the resources had been well managed. The architect was Victor von Gegerfelt and the builder was Krüger & Westerberg. In 1874, the hall was finished and its appearance meant that the people of Gothenburg quickly renamed it “Feskekörka”. CHURCH INSPIRATION It is not surprising that the new building was named Feskekörka; It is clear that von Gegerfelt drew inspiration from ancient Nordic stave churches and neo-Gothic architecture. The wooden structure of the roof can be clearly seen from the inside. The roof trusses are reinforced by transverse male beams that relieve the pressure from the sides according to the principle of the strut system in Gothic churches. This construction made it possible to create a large and open hall without load-bearing central and side columns. It also made it possible to provide the building with many windows with neo-Gothic pointed arch shapes and small spires. The steep tin roof also contributes to the pointed impression. The facades are made of yellow brick. At the beginning of the last century, there was a “ferry service” between Fisktorget and Pustervikskajen. The ferry can best be described as a raft that was rowed by hand by the autocratic skipper “Kalle”, Karl Alfred Andersson. The fare was 1 öre per person and the ferry was frequently used by wives who did not want to go around Rosenlundsbron when they went to buy fish. The cold winter of 1916 was hard on the ferry, and Kalle stopped the traffic. THE HALL IS MODERNIZED Feskekörka has undergone several renovations over the years. In the 1960s, a major modernization of the interior was carried out in order to meet the demands of the time for food hygiene. Previously, fishmongers had also had tables in the middle of the hall, and it often became crowded when customers had to walk around. Now the counters were moved out along the sides and a customer corridor was created in the middle. Closest to the outer walls were offices, cold rooms, etc. In 1970, the first couple in Feskekörka were married by the well-known Gothenburg priest Ebbe Hagard. Feskekörka became a listed building in 2013. In its decision, the County Administrative Board highlighted, among other things, the building's unique architectural expression, its important role in the cityscape at the quay and its iconic status for Gothenburg. In 2020, Feskekörka closed for an extensive renovation, where the architecture takes its place. Fish counters, several restaurants and endless experiences are waiting for you. Warm Welcome!
